Mums in Tech ft. Victoria Ulph

As part of the ‘Mums in Tech’ series, MotherBoard caught up with Victoria Ulph, Head of Research and Insight at Dialect Inc

The purpose of the ‘MotherBoard’ content series is to highlight incredible working mums within tech & data, as well as individuals and businesses that are supportive and progressive within their approach to creating more inclusive tech & data teams for women.

Firstly, can you please introduce yourself and tell us a bit about your current role?

I’m Victoria, Head of Research and Insight at Dialect, a creative marketing agency specializing in tech and gaming audiences. My role is to ensure that our decisions are grounded in data and not just assumptions. I’m passionate about truly understanding audiences beyond basic demographics, diving into their mindsets, attitudes, behaviors, and motivations. This allows us to create more meaningful and impactful strategies for our clients.

If you could sum up what it’s like being a working mum in tech in one sentence, what would it be?

It’s like being a superhero—always on the brink of a breakthrough or a breakdown!

How do you find the balance between your career and motherhood?

Setting clear boundaries is key. I’ve learned to confidently communicate when I’m unavailable, and I’m fortunate to work for a company that supports flexibility. At Dialect, we have a culture that values work-life balance, which allows me to manage both my career and family life effectively. I’ve also been inspired by female leaders within the company who have paved the way for working mums like me.

What has been your greatest challenge as a working mother in tech?

The biggest challenge has been returning to work after maternity leave. It’s easy to feel like you’ve lost momentum or been left behind. I’m only a few weeks into my return, but I’m focusing on viewing this as an opportunity to refocus, rebuild, and approach my work with a fresh perspective.

“Setting clear boundaries is key. I’ve learned to confidently communicate when I’m unavailable, and I’m fortunate to work for a company that supports flexibility. ”

What skills have you developed as a mother that have helped your work life?

Motherhood has enhanced my multitasking, problem-solving, and efficiency. I’ve learned to get things done within limited time frames because I have to! It has also pushed me to explore new tools, especially AI, to streamline my day-to-day work and make the most of my time.

How are you feeling about your return to work, and is there something that might make your return smoother for you?

I’m feeling positive and motivated, largely thanks to the incredible support from Dialect. I’ve been given a staggered return, and I’m also paired with a “mother mentor”—a colleague who returned from maternity leave a year ago—to guide me through the transition. Dialect also offers a fantastic benefit where returning mums receive 13 months of pay within their first 12 months back. Honestly, I couldn’t ask for a smoother return.

“Don’t let maternity leave slow you down. There’s a misconception that women fall behind during this period, but I encourage you to reframe it as a time for self-reflection. Use it to return to work with renewed energy and a sense of empowerment. You’re stronger than ever!”

What do you feel should be the top priority for employers who want to support working mothers better?

Creating a culture of autonomy and acceptance for all working parents—mums and dads alike—is crucial. Flexible working shouldn’t just be for mums; dads face similar pressures. Employers should encourage flexible schedules, offer staggered returns, and be open to part-time or flexible working requests as much as possible.

Any final words of advice for other mothers in the Tech Industry?

Don’t let maternity leave slow you down. There’s a misconception that women fall behind during this period, but I encourage you to reframe it as a time for self-reflection. Use it to return to work with renewed energy and a sense of empowerment. You’re stronger than ever!
