View profileI had some very nice comments from compiling my list last year so I decided to go again with a quick list highlighting some of the most exciting ClimateTech innovators in our region.
In no particular order (I promise!), here’s a few to look out for this year:
Spruce build tools to help ambitious heat pump installers run their business without the pain, hassle, and manual processes. They believe that the only way to seriously accelerate the roll out of heat pumps is to put the needs of heating engineers and installation businesses front and centre. Their Estimate Tool helps handle enquiries – allowing installers to respond in minutes not days, their Survey & Design Tool then manages the heat loss survey, system design, and report creation.
Wilder Sensing provide a cloud platform to enable investors, land managers, farmers, ecologists and citizen scientists to better understand changes to biodiversity. Using audio files and Machine Learning, Wilder Sensing provides details of what’s present on a site and, over time, helps understand changes to biodiversity. The company joined the SetSquared Incubator in Bristol in January 2023 and raised a pre-seed investment of £700,000. After an appearance on BBC’s ‘Springwatch’ they are continuing to grow with more hires and features coming soon.
Bristol based SuSy House are on a mission to help homeowners to reduce energy consumption, save money, and cut CO2 emissions. Their app is a free-to-use resource that helps you identify the smartest green upgrades, connect with local installers, and find opportunities for supplements, grants and funding. They believe that taking responsibility for your own home is the best way to change the world and their app can help you save money and increasing the value of your property at the same time! Their app launched in June 2023 and last year they secured a partnership with Bristol City Leap to propel Bristol towards Net Zero by 2030 which was followed after an award of an Innovate UK grant of £249,000 by Innovate UK.
Cepro works with housebuilders to design, develop and deliver funded community microgrids. It then operates these over the long term to enable energy customers to benefit fully from clean, local renewable energy generation via reduced bills. After successfully delivering their first two community microgrids, they have exceeded their £600k fund raise target to further transform domestic energy infrastructure. Having successfully delivered several operational net zero energy projects such as Hazelmead, the largest community microgrid in the UK, and Water Lilies, an innovative 33-home net zero housing development in Bristol, Cepro’s smart microgrid technology is transforming the way new homes are being built.
Recently BCorp certified 3Adapt embrace complexity to enable change that enriches society and is kind to the planet. They provide robust models of sustainability, collating evidence, and applying leading research to grow natural, social, human, intellectual, manufactured and financial capital. Using the Six Capitals approach, supporting a variety of organisations including land owners, local authorities, utilities companies, universities and museums to help build decarbonisation plans and adapt to climate change. They are launching Landarna, the world’s first innovative web platform to assess, inform and report the holistic impact of land opportunities, enabling more people to make more sustainable land use decisions.
Driven by innovation, Renewable Exchange are transforming how renewable energy is exchanged by providing an intelligent, data-driven PPA marketplace coupled with expert consultancy. They ensure clients have better choice than ever before through smarter insight and greater transparency, and with a more connected market they’re making more opportunities open to more people in selling renewable power that puts generators first. They launched the Renewable Exchange Platform in 2018 becoming the world’s first online power purchase agreement (PPA) platform. It is now the largest online platform connecting renewable energy generators and buyers to ensure a transparent and data-driven power trading process in the UK.
Founded less than 5 years ago, Albotherm develop paints that are designed to reflect the sun’s rays at high temperatures, reducing solar gain and helping to cool buildings without burning fossil fuels. From greenhouses to commercial buildings and beyond, their advanced technology coatings ensure efficient and sustainable temperature control for a range of applications. 2023 saw them acquire over £2m in funding to develop technology further, scale up their manufacturing capabilities, completing large scale commercial pilots. Last year was just as impressive as they secured a £500,000 Innovate UK Grant, won a Tech South West award, conducted their first commercial trials and moved into new offices with their very own lab space.
Glaia develops innovative solutions for sustainable agriculture. Their mission is to enhance agricultural productivity and reduce the pressure on natural resources by optimising the performance of plants. With an innovative approach to the development of more efficient and sustainable agrochemicals, Glaia’s disruptive technology improves photosynthesis in plants, which is the current bottleneck in food production. They have already deployed Glaia into field trials across three key food crops – strawberries, tomatoes and lettuce. Glaia uses a synthetic version to open up the photosynthetic process inside plant cells so they can take in more solar energy and convert it into more biomass.
DIMPACT is a collaborative project, convened by Carnstone, with world-class researchers from the University of Bristol and eighteen of the world’s most innovative media and technology companies including Netflix, Sky and BBC. The project aims to develop an online tool that takes the complexity out of calculating the carbon emissions of the downstream value chain of digital media content. Once successfully piloted, DIMPACT will become a subscription-based model, available to any company delivering digital media content.
Founded in 2021 and based in Bath, DRIFT offers a brand-new class of mobile, renewable energy that is independent of any power grid. High performance, state-of-the-art sailing ships harness deep ocean wind to produce green hydrogen at sea and deliver it globally, essentially making them ‘fishing boats for energy’. They do this using a unique, AI-enabled vessel routing algorithm that keeps them in optimum weather conditions. One of DRIFT’s energy harvesting ships could produce enough green energy to power 800-1000 UK homes, 30 hydrogen powered buses or a fleet of 400 hydrogen vans in a single year. DRIFT Energy has been listed at #11 in the prestigious Startups 100 Index for 2025, which lists the top 100 startups with the highest growth potential for the year ahead as well as winning the Startups 100 Sustainability Award, celebrating businesses that demonstrate innovative and impactful sustainability practices.
